"BOOZHOO" (Ojibwa for hello)

Some say curiosity is the main ingredient of invention. I can’t argue with that because it is a good portion of the equation; however, personally, I would say the key ingredient is having a strong memory.

When I was very young, people said I had a special gift - the ability to memorize things. I would look at most any type of item, whether it be a book, letter, math equation, etc., and remember it. My grandmother would always say to others “that boy has the memory of 10 elephants”. In my professional inventor life, quite often I use this gift whenever I come across a problem or something that needs an element of improvement. I recant from memory a better component for a better solution.

From my perspective I believe great inventions are meant to serve people and better their lives. Taking out complexity and putting simplicity back is the most brilliant element of a great invention.

Lately, I get a lot of independent inventors asking me to value their new invention for them, which I normally push back on. To me, an inventor’s idea is like a work of art - some are masterpieces and some are not, but for those that are not, the value of the idea is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen inventors fight for ideas that some would say are fruitless and a waste of effort. While I do think some ideas are better than others, I would never say that any patented invention is a bad idea.

I often have other fellow inventors contacting me to say they admire me for standing up for my inventions. Almost all of them have questions about how to implement protective strategies that would enable them to form and maintain a protective beachhead for their inventions that are being, or soon to be, attacked. My advice is always straightforward and simple: do what you think is right, plan ahead, and utilize all of the legal expertise you can get. If you’re going to fight the fight for your invention, never think short term - always plan 5 to 10 years out, prepare to go all the way up the appeals process, and never, ever give up.

My partners and I founded SIPCO as an independent inventors company. It is majority owned by the inventor (myself) and managed collectively by my teammates and I. Together, we continue to strive to invent, break new ground, and take the complexity out of complex problems.
